Why Do We Feel Behind in Life's Race?
The Illusion of Needing to Catch Up

Married by 30. Career established by 35. Financial stability by 40.
"Shouldn't I be there by now?"
When you start to question why you haven't reached a certain stage of life, this goes beyond comparison. You're probably experiencing the psychological weight of the "social clock."
But what happens when your life doesn't tick according to schedule?
What Is the Social Clock?
The social clock is an invisible timeline that tells us when we're expected to reach major milestones in life. This includes finishing school, starting a career, getting married, having children, or owning a home. These expectations are shaped by our culture, family beliefs, and even what we see on social media.
The hard part is that this timeline often feels like a rulebook we're meant to follow. And when our lives don't match it, we can start to feel like we've fallen behind or missed our chance.
The Mental Toll of Feeling "Behind"
When we fall "behind" on the social clock, we experience persistent anxiety about "catching up" or making up for lost time. This anxiety often comes with diminished self-worth and questioning of personal competence.
Many people struggle with grief over the life they think they should have by now. This often-unspoken grief can colour all other experiences with shame and regret. The pressure to conform can also disconnect us from our inner compass, leading to choices that feel misaligned with who we really are.
The urgency of "catching up" can also push us towards rushed decisions that might not serve our future wellbeing. When we're focused on ticking boxes to meet society's timeline, we may choose careers, relationships, or life paths that look right on paper but don't truly fit who we are.
What You Can Do
Start by noticing which expectations are causing you stress. Ask yourself where those ideas came from and whether they actually match what you want for your life.
Then, try to define success for yourself. What kind of life feels right to you? What values matter most?
It also helps to spend time with people who respect your journey and support your choices, even if your path looks different.
