Signs You Might Benefit From Counselling

Tony Novissimo • July 26, 2026

One of the most common things people say in a first session is, "I wasn't sure if my situation was bad enough to come."

Let me say this clearly: counselling is not reserved for people in crisis. You do not need to be at breaking point to deserve support. In fact, the people who come earlier often find the work shorter and more effective.

This post is for anyone who has been quietly wondering whether what they are experiencing "counts." Here are six honest signs it might.

1. You are carrying something you cannot share with the people closest to you

Sometimes the issue is the relationship itself. Sometimes it is something you do not want to burden the people you love with. Sometimes it is shame.

Whatever the reason, when you find yourself shrinking the truth in conversations with the people you are supposed to be closest to, that is a sign you need somewhere to be honest. Counselling is built for exactly this. The whole point of the room is that nothing leaves it.

2. The same problem keeps showing up in different forms

A pattern in relationships. A recurring loop with work. A version of the same difficult feeling that turns up in different settings.

When something keeps reappearing, it usually means there is an underlying piece that has not been addressed. You can keep trying to solve the surface version, but until the root gets a proper look at, the pattern continues.

This is where counselling earns its keep. Together we can find the through-line and work with it directly.

3. You feel disconnected from yourself

Not depressed exactly. Not anxious exactly. Just somehow not yourself.

People describe this differently. "Going through the motions." "On autopilot." "I don't recognise who I have become." "I miss me."

This kind of disconnection often builds slowly, which is why it is easy to dismiss. But it is a real signal. We are not designed to feel like strangers in our own lives.

4. A specific event has happened and you are not sure how to move through it

Bereavement. A relationship ending. A diagnosis. A redundancy. A betrayal. A child leaving home. A change you chose but did not expect to feel this way about.

Major events often have a delayed emotional impact. You manage the practical, then six weeks or six months later something cracks open. Counselling gives you a structured place to process the emotional weight without dragging your daily life into it.

5. The strategies that used to work have stopped working

Exercise used to lift your mood and now it does not. Reading used to settle you and now it does not. The friend you always called is not enough this time. The wine in the evening is no longer relaxing, it is just routine.

When your usual coping methods stop reaching the thing they used to reach, it usually means the thing has shifted and needs different support. This is not a failure of willpower. It is a signal.

6. You have been wondering whether you should book counselling

This one sounds glib but I mean it sincerely.

The fact that you have been thinking about it is the data. Curiosity about counselling rarely arrives from nowhere. There is usually something underneath asking to be heard.

A free 15-minute breakthrough call is the lowest-pressure way to find out whether the timing is right. No commitment, no expectation, just a conversation.

What counselling is not for

I want to be honest here too.

Counselling is not a replacement for medical care if you are in serious crisis or feeling unsafe. If that is where you are right now, please contact your GP, the Samaritans on 116 123, or NHS 111. These services exist for exactly this and are free to use.

Counselling is also not advice. I will not tell you what to do, who to leave, or what choice to make. The work is helping you find your own clarity, supported by someone who has spent 20+ years sitting with people through exactly these questions.

How to take the next step

If anything in this post resonates, the free 15-minute breakthrough call is the easiest way to begin.

It is exactly what it says: a quiet, no-pressure conversation where you can tell me what is going on and ask any questions about how I work. From there, we can decide together whether it is the right time and the right fit.
